The Wonder That Breaks Through

Posted December 14, 2025

Day 2 - The Wonder That Breaks Through

"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor..." — Isaiah 9:6

Reflection

Life can become dull. The routine, the disappointments, the endless cycle of obligations can drain the wonder from our days. Where did the excitement go? When did life become so... ordinary?

We pursue substitutes to generate excitement—entertainment, purchases, achievements, the next thing that promises to fill the void. We scroll, we shop, we work harder, we plan the next vacation. But often, we end up missing the real source of joy.

The name "Wonderful" speaks to God's ability to restore wonder to life. He brings amazement where there was monotony, excitement where there was emptiness. His very name means "wonder-full"—full of wonder, overflowing with it.

Think about the story of George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life." Standing on that bridge, ready to end it all because life had become so dull, so disappointing. The commercialism, the exploitation, the greed—it had drained the wonder from his existence. But when Clarence showed him what life would be like without him, wonder broke through again.

Where has life become routine for you? What substitutes have you been chasing, hoping they'll bring back the spark? The Wonderful Counselor doesn't just give you advice about your dullness—He brings wonder itself. He is the cure for the monotony.

Application

Look for one moment of wonder in your ordinary day today. It might be small—sunlight through a window, a child's laugh, the taste of coffee. When you see it, whisper: 'This too is wonderful—God is here.'

Prayer

Wonderful God, restore wonder to my life. I confess I've been looking for excitement in all the wrong places, pursuing substitutes instead of seeking You. Open my eyes to see Your awesome presence in ordinary moments. When life feels dull and routine, remind me that You are present, making all things beautiful in Your time. Fill my heart with amazement at Your goodness. Amen.
