The Volunteer Initiatives Program launched in 2004 to engage residents in civic service. The office annually places 3,000- 5,000 volunteers within various City departments. On February 3, 2010, Mayor Parker joined the Cities of Service Coalition, a bipartisan coalition of mayors who have committed to work together to lead a multi‐year effort to expand impact volunteerism. The VIPs office regularly partners with non‐profits profits, faith‐based organizations, schools, and universities.
The Department of Neighborhoods has five divisions that help neighbors resolve neighborhood concerns. Together, we help improve the quality of life in Houston neighborhoods through people-focused programs and strong community partnerships. The Office of Neighborhood Engagement engages citizens throughout the area in education, volunteer, grant funding, and youth leadership development programing.
Volunteers are invited to lead activities with clients, such as making cards, doing crafts, and playing sports, or work on home improvement projects such as painting, gardening, and organizing. Only requirements are creativity and a liability waiver signed by a parent or guardian.
Please submit a volunteer inquiry via the website, or send an email to volunteer@vitaliving.org.
