Learning from Demas' Departure: AWOL from Service

Learning from Demas' Departure: AWOL from Service
Reflection
Demas began well—serving alongside Paul, spreading the gospel, walking in faith. Yet somewhere along the way, the pull of the world became too strong. His name shifted from “coworker” to “deserter.” Through this message, Pastor West reminds us that spiritual decline rarely happens overnight. It starts with small compromises, misplaced affections, and unchecked distractions that eventually lead us away from our calling.
God desires faithfulness, not perfection. Pastor West teaches that what matters most is not the strength of our start, but the endurance of our finish. Like Paul, may we be able to say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)
Lessons from the Life of Demas
-
A good start doesn’t guarantee a faithful finish. Stay rooted in Christ daily.
-
Distractions aren’t always sinful—just misplaced priorities. Don’t let good things replace God things.
-
Faithfulness leaves a record. Every act of obedience adds to your spiritual legacy.
-
God always completes His work. What He starts in you, He intends to finish—if you stay surrendered.
Action of Steps
-
Reassess your priorities: What competes for your affection more than Christ?
-
Renew your commitment to serve: Re-engage where you may have grown weary or distracted.
-
Remember your witness: Your faithfulness today shapes how others will remember you tomorrow.
-
Rely on God’s grace: When you stumble, return quickly. His grace restores and strengthens the willing heart.
Prayer
Gracious God, thank You for the reminder that our faithfulness matters. Help us not to be swayed by distractions or the love of this world. Teach us to endure, to serve with steadfast hearts, and to finish our race strong. May our record before You reveal loyalty, not abandonment; devotion, not distraction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
This blog post is inspired by Pastor Ralph West's sermon, "AWOL from Service". This sermon emphasizes that God performs miracles in response to our problems and limitations, particularly when we acknowledge our complete dependence on Him and remain open to His provision.
