A Costly Act of Love

A Costly Act of Love
February 15 - 21
"Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume." (John 12:3)
Devotional: Giving someone an expensive gift of perfume is typically reserved for special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, or holidays. The price of pure nard imported from the mountains of India that Mary had in her possession was valued at more than a full year’s wages. At this astronomical cost, it was hard to believe, especially for those watching her, that she would pour the whole jar on Jesus’ feet, when a little dab would have probably been enough. This was a costly act of love to show honor and devotion to Him. Gratitude is not always shown by acknowledging what has been given to us, but sometimes it is shown in what we give to others. What a sacrifice Jesus made when He gave his life for us; Jesus paid it all, and all to Him we owe!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us recognize that the value of material things does not compare to the sacrifice you made when you gave your life for us. May we extend our love and devotion in making the sacrifice of giving to others, even if it does costs us something. Let us always understand the need to show our gratitude for the great things you have done and continue to do in our lives. In Jesus’ Name we pray… Amen!
Reflection Question: What thing(s) of great value would you generously sacrifice this week to show gratitude towards others for what Christ has done for you?
