West Houston Assistance Ministries

Who We Are

West Houston area churches and civic associations collaborated in 1979 to meet human services needs in the community. A total of seven places of worship established the non-profit organization, Westheimer Social Ministry (WSM). In 1982 it became a crisis agency to provide basic living needs for children, families, and homeless individuals through four programs. In Year 2000 the Second Blessing Store, Client Services, Job Search, and Food Pantry combined under one roof, at 10501 Meadowglen Lane. The name was changed to West Houston Assistance Ministries, Inc., also known as WHAM.

What We Do

WHAM fights hunger and homelessness by providing families in need with food, clothing, financial help, and employment services. We serve approximately 33,000 individuals annually, 80% of whom receive food from our “Client Choice” food pantry. WHAM does not discriminate and offers assistance regardless of race, gender, creed, nationality, age, disability, or religious preference. WHAM Family Services / CARE Ministry provides client’s immediate needs and establishes a long-term plan to get them back on their feet. Assistance includes financial aid, nutritious food, and clean clothing. The WHAM Employment Service Center provides job leads, resume assistance, computer and print resources for seeking employment, skills assessments, interview prep and referrals to Dress for Success and Career Gear. Educational opportunities are made available to the general public: * ESL Classes offer English conversation instruction to the community. The WHAM Food Pantry provides nutritional food (i.e. fresh, perishable, and non-perishable groceries), personal hygiene items, and paper products to residents in our seven- zip code region. Additionally, we provide basic necessities of living and clothing to homeless individuals regardless of their base location. The Second Blessing Store, a re-sale store, sells a variety of donated merchandise at very affordable prices to the public. Each year WHAM engages in these Special Projects: * Back-To-School supplies for young students from families with limited budgets. * Holiday meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas family celebrations.
