Friends of Down Syndrome is committed to supporting the Down syndrome community in the most important ways. Our dedication to lifelong learning is at the center of our organization. Our Mission The Friends of Down Syndrome’s mission is to create lifelong education and learning opportunities for teens and adults with Down syndrome through education, socialization, and community outreach. Our Vision We envision a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to continue their education, contribute to their community, enhance their quality of life, realize their life potential, and to join (inclusion in) the broader community.
It’s an exciting time to be a part of the Down syndrome community in Houston. At Friends of Down Syndrome, we are doing everything we can to support teens and adults with Down syndrome. We call it Making WAVES! Here at the Down Syndrome Academy, adults with Down syndrome have an opportunity to continue their education beyond high school. Our Down Syndrome Academy teaches classes in Reading, Math, Art, Physical Education, Life Skills and Social Skills. We are giving students the skills and confidence to join the broader community. We offer in-school and off-campus opportunities in vocational training. Local businesses are reaching out to us to provide them with employees. Welcome to the Friends of Down Syndrome Community! Whether you’re a student, parent, volunteer, corporate funder or just someone who cares, we hope you’ll spend some time with us, learning how you can participate. Don’t hesitate to be in touch.
You will be working alongside our students (adults with Down syndrome) by assisting in a classroom environment, helping our student’s stay on track and work with the instructor on the daily assignments. We have a rotating classroom schedule so you will have the opportunity to get to know each one of our students. You will also assist in classroom bell changes, party’s, dancing, and having fun!! Lunch time is 1 hour and you will love dining in our lunchroom with the student’s and getting to know them. We can’t wait to meet YOU!!
